SCHC Spring 2020 meeting
unable to proceed due to COVID-19

Statement regarding the SCHC Spring Meeting and Coronavirus (COVID-19):

The SCHC leadership has been monitoring recent events that have caused an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, and we have made an assessment considering guidance from the CDC, WHO and local government bodies including the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. While the overall exposure risk to the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to be low1, communities across the country are making preparations to deal with an outbreak.  A number of organizations recommend avoiding unnecessary travel and not gathering in large groups, such as conferences, to mitigate the risk of exposure and spreading of this communicable virus.  Several organizations have recently terminated Spring meetings, conventions and other large group gatherings due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19.  A state of emergency was declared by the Governor of North Carolina on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 concerning the COVID-19 virus.  This declaration was made one day after health officials in North Carolina announced that seven people in that state have been diagnosed with coronavirus.  

Prioritizing the safety, health and wellness of our members and attendees is critical. The SCHC Board of Directors have made the decision not to proceed with the 2020 SCHC Spring Meeting that was to take place in Charlotte, North Carolina at the end of March. We know that this may be disappointing news to some and an immediate relief to others.

This decision was not made lightly as we understand the value and expense that comes with attending this event. This event is not only a benefit for each attendee, it also plays a role in our organization's annual budget and future event planning. We will be able to provide information about refunds soon and we will email each registered attendee and post an update on our website with additional details.

For those who will need to adjust/cancel their travel plans and hotel bookings, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible.
We want to thank our sponsors, educators, volunteers, poster presenters, and event organizers for their commitment and hard work in preparing for this event. It is much appreciated and we, too, are disappointed. Poster presenter abstracts can be viewed on the SCHC website.

We appreciate everyone's understanding and patience as we determine other options and opportunities that can benefit our members at this time. We welcome suggestions and ideas, and please know that we will continue to communicate to you as decisions are made.
