Description

This course will provide an overview of the Canadian WHMIS 2015 requirements for suppliers.

Participants are expected to have a good general understanding of the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling (GHS) and/or the U.S. Hazard Communication Standard 2012 (HCS 2012).

The course will introduce the Canadian approach to the regulation of hazardous products, the WHMIS 2015 hazard classes and categories, SDS and supplier label requirements (including exemptions from these requirements), document retention requirements, and how to protect trade secrets (Confidential Business Information). Variances between the HCS 2012 and WHMIS 2015 implementations of the GHS will be highlighted.

Note: This course will not cover how to classify hazardous products.

Hazard communication professionals who need to understand the Canadian WHMIS 2015 requirements and how they differ from HCS 2012.

Course Director / Instructor

Jessie Callaghan, B.Sc.

Jessie Callaghan is a Senior Technical Specialist at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). Jessie’s work at CCOHS is focused on understanding the Canadian implementation of the GHS (WHMIS 2015) from the perspective of all stakeholders – government, suppliers, employers, and workers.

Jessie is a member of the Health Canada Intergovernmental WHMIS Coordinating Committee (IWCC), and the WHMIS Current Issues Committee (CIC), as well as the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation (CAALL) GHS/WHMIS Ad Hoc Committee on Communication and Training.

Jennifer Dipper, B.Sc.

Jennifer Dipper is the Supervisor, General Health and Safety Services at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). Previously, Jennifer led a team of information specialists who responded to WHMIS 2015 inquiries received by CCOHS, and has participated in the development of WHMIS 2015 educational presentations, fact sheets, audience-specific guides, e-learning programs and frequently asked questions (FAQs). Jennifer is also a member of the team that developed the pan-Canadian web portal, WHMIS.org.

Anne-Marie Besliu, B.Sc.

Anne-Marie Besliu is an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). She researches health and safety topics, writes and reviews educational fact sheets and e-courses, participates in the development of the CCOHS CHEMINFO database, answers inquiries from the public, and has participated in the assessment and development of health and safety programs. Anne-Marie has been involved in in the development of WHMIS-specific guidelines and e-learning tools, and is part of CCOHS’ team of information specialists who respond to WHMIS 2015 inquiries.
