Course Description and Objectives

The Advanced Topics in EHS series of courses is designed to expand on topics that are introduced in the basic SCHC courses. The topic of occupational exposure limits is introduced in the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for Hazard Communication.

The goal of this course is to provide participants with a detailed understanding of occupational exposure limits and their global role in HazCom. Emphasis is placed on the science and various methodologies used for establishing occupational exposure limits as well as the appropriate uses of occupational exposure limits in hazard communication. The course will prepare participants to evaluate and appy occupational exposure limits for HazCom purposes.

This is an advanced course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is recommended that participants have taken the SCHC course Toxicology for Hazard Communication or be comfortable with the basic principles of toxicology.

Hazard communication professionals looking to expand their understanding of the development and application of occupation exposure limits and their role in hazard communication.

Robert Skoglund, Ph.D., DABT, CIH

Dr. Skoglund is the Director of Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs at Covestro LLC.  His responsibilities include product safety, compliance, stewardship, and sustainability for North America - including hazard communication.


Course Instructor

Catherine F. Jacobson, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Jacobson is a Senior Toxicology Specialist at the 3M Company. Her primary responsibilities include assessing the human health hazards and risks of raw materials, chemical intermediates, and products for several 3M business units. In addition, she oversees the authoring of hazard communication documents and develops comprehensive health hazard profiles for chemical substances important to 3M.

Robert Roy, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Roy is a Lead Toxicology Specialist at 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. His primary responsibilities include assessing the human health hazards and safety of products and other materials for several 3M business units. In addition, he leads the development of the 3M Occupational Exposure Guidelines and has been actively involved in California Proposition 65 assessments, chemical health hazard determination, and the human risk/safety assessment of chemicals /intermediates and finished products.
