Jennifer Silk had a distinguished career at OSHA, where she was the Deputy Director of Standards and Guidance at the time of her retirement. Jennifer was the team leader for development of the original Hazard Communication Standard published on November 25, 1983.
She led the international effort to develop a globally harmonized system for hazard communication and represented the U.S. Government in negotiations to develop the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, chaired the international coordinating group that managed development of the GHS, and served as the first U.S. expert to the United Nations Subcommittee of Experts on the GHS. After retiring from OSHA, Jennifer continued working as a consultant and training advisor to the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
Do you know why the UN GHS Purple Book is purple? Because it was Jennifer's favorite color.
Jennifer graced the world from 1950 to 2019, and we are honored to recognize her contributions and legacy with the Jennifer Silk Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.
