Description:

The European Union implemented the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) through its Classification, Labeling & Packaging Regulation (CLP) which becomes fully effective on 1 June 2015. This workshop has been revised to focus on the CLP regulation as it will be in effect on that date. This course comprises an in-depth look at the EU requirements for classifying chemical products, both substances and mixtures, and then for communicating their hazards through a comprehensive program of labels and Safety Data Sheets. Thus, students will learn to classify both substances and mixtures for physical, health and environmental effects according to the CLP and to prepare the appropriate SDS and labels.

The course uses many hands-on exercises throughout to teach how to classify substances and mixtures and to use the results of those classifications in preparing Safety Data Sheets and labels that comply with the EU requirements. The course will also briefly cover the extended Safety Data Sheet, which is unique to the EU. Students will also be advised on how to meet interim requirements that apply until 1 June 2015.

Intended Audience

This is considered to be an advanced course. While there are no specific prerequisites, it is strongly recommended that participants possess a working knowledge of SDS and labels and an understanding of the principles of the GHS.

Michael J. Reale, Ph.D. Dr. Reale received his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry in 1966 from Fordham University, and has over 46 years’ experience in the chemical field as an industrial chemist and consultant. In his practice he has worked extensively with the US, Canadian, and EU regulations on hazardous substances and mixtures, and has classified diverse consumer and specialty products - both pure substances and mixtures - and has, for many years, prepared Safety Data Sheets complying with the 16-section format. Dr. Reale lectures extensively in this field, and conducts training programs for clients. He has been an active member of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication since 1981 and was a member of its Board of Directors for 14 years. Dr Reale lectures extensively on hazard communication, has co-authored Material Safety Data Sheets - A Writer's Desk Reference, authored a chapter in Improving Safety in the Chemical Laboratory, and provided informative responses to questions for Compliance Magazine.

 

Course Instructor:

Pamela Kreis Ms. Kreis is the Vice President and co-founder of Scientific & Regulatory Solutions, LLC, an environmental consulting firm that specializes in assisting chemical manufacturers, importers, and processors with the reporting and recordkeeping requirements of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), TSCA-like chemical regulations in other countries, and the requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Pam assists companies in developing comprehensive product safety programs, auditing existing programs, supporting client efforts in generating both domestic and international Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and/or product labels. Pam is a frequent speaker at in-house company TSCA training courses, public TSCA seminars, international hazard communication courses and international chemical control law courses. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Delaware and has taken a variety of other courses and seminars in the sciences and product safety areas. She is an active member of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication.
