Course Description:

Note: Advanced Topics in EHS courses expand upon topics introduced in other SCHC courses. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls are introduced in the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for Hazard Communication. This is considered to be an advanced course for hazard communicators and SDS authors but is not intended to be an advanced industrial hygiene course.

As hazard communicators, it can be challenging to provide useful guidance to end users about how to protect themselves from chemical exposures in the workplace. The goal of this course is to provide a detailed look at the information needed to complete Sections 6 through 8 of the SDS, including various considerations in the use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment to control workplace exposures. This course seeks to give hazard communicators the tools they need to select information that is appropriate and consistent with available information regarding normal conditions of downstream use. Both normal operations and emergency situations, such as fire and accidental release, will be addressed.

To provide participants with a greater understanding of the use of PPE, examples of gloves, eye and face protection, protective clothing, and respirators will be modeled and available for inspection. In addition to covering basic concepts regarding engineering controls and the use and selection of PPE, information resources to assist in the development of these recommendations for the SDS will be presented in detail. OSHA, NIOSH, PPE manufacturers’ websites, and other resources will be reviewed. The final portion of the course will include examples of SDS sections 6-8, discussion of what information should be included, and how much detail is appropriate. Liability issues will also be discussed.

This is considered to be an advanced course for hazard communicators and SDS authors but is not intended to be an advanced industrial hygiene course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is strongly recommended that participants have a working knowledge of SDS and labels and that they have either taken the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for the Hazard Communicator or that they are comfortable with the basic principles of industrial hygiene.

 Course Director / Instructor

	Chandra D. Gioiello, MS, CIH, SDSRP Chandra Deeds Gioiello has a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from Franklin and Marshall College and a Master’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene from University of New Haven.  She is vice president of IHSC, LLC, a small consulting firm that focuses on international regulatory compliance and SDS and label authoring.  Chandra is a registered Safety Data Sheet and Label Author and a Certified Industrial Hygienist.  Her focus in on international chemical regulations including GHS adoption, labeling, and chemical control laws.  She regularly helps clients navigate the regulations across the globe, especially the Asia-Pacific countries.  She is active with the the American Industrial Hygiene Association.  She helped create the SDS and Label Author registry for AIHA. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) from 2016-2019.  She previously served as the chair of the SCHC Social Media Committee and spearheaded their social media expansion. She is currently the chair of the SCHC Member Engagement Committee and Past-President of the Connecticut River Valley chapter of AIHA. She is the 2024 recipient of the AIHA Fellows SIG Outstanding Midcareer Professional Award. You may recognize her from the SCHC Member Forums!
Course Instructor
	Julia Diebol, Ph.D., CSP. C.P.S.M. Julia Diebol is a Managing Scientist in Exponent’s Human Factors practice, based in Bellevue, Washington. Herareas of expertise include human factors, product and occupational safety, and chemical hazard communication. As a Certified Product Safety Manager and a Certified Safety Professional, Dr. Diebol regularly evaluates product literature (warnings, instructions, user manuals, labels, safety data sheets, advertisements, instructional videos, etc.), as well as occupational safety management policies, programs, procedures, and training materials. She also provides expert analysis and testimony in cases involving product liability, occupational safety, personal injury, and toxic torts, among others. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan College of Engineering and conducted her graduate research in risk communication at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Dr. Diebol has served as SCHC President and has previously chaired various committees for SCHC.
