Description

The Advanced Topics in EHS series of courses were designed to expand on topics that were introduced in the basic SCHC courses. The topic of clinical toxicology – first aid and note to physicians was introduced in the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for Hazard Communication.

The goal of this course is to provide an in-depth examination of the intent and objectives of first aid statements and notes to physicians on MSDSs and labels. Emphasis is placed on an understanding of the basic principles of these topics and the development of the technical skills and background necessary to develop appropriate first-aid statements and notes to physicians for chemicals and mixtures. This course was recently updated for GHS and REACH.

This is an advanced course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is strongly recommended that participants have either taken the SCHC course Toxicology for Hazard Communication or that they be comfortable with the basic principles of toxicology.

Intended Audience

Hazard communication professionals looking to broaden their understanding of first aid statements and notes to physicians and to strengthen their MSDS and label authoring skills.
Course Director

Robert Skoglund, Ph.D., DABT, CIH

Dr. Skoglund is a Senior Laboratory Manager at the 3M Company.  His primary responsibilities include corporate oversight of material EHS issues including global hazard communication and other applied and regulatory toxicology issues and programs.

Mohamud Daya, MD, MS, FACEP, FACMT, DTM&H

Dr. Daya is an Associate Professor and practicing emergency medicine physician at the Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland, Oregon.  In addition he is the Physician Supervisor for the Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and a Medical Consultant for the Oregon Poison Center.  One of Dr. Daya's areas of interest and expertise is the treatment and management of chemical exposures.

Robert Roy, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Roy is a Lead Toxicology Specialist at 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. His primary responsibilities include assessing the human health hazards and safety of products and other materials for several 3M business units. In addition he plays a leadership role in 3M Occupational Exposure Guideline development; California Proposition 65 compliance; consumer product labels; and hazard determination, hazard communication, and risk assessment issues.

 

Course Instructor

Ann C. Thompson, Ph.D.

Dr. Thompson is a Technical Manager in the 3M Medical Department.  Her responsibilities include corporate oversight of 3M's emergency medical toxicology hotline and training on hazard communication, toxicology and product EHS regulations.
