Multi-Modal  / Dangerous Goods Classification Refresher

View Brochure - Available via Distance Training February 2024

NOTE: You will receive a certificate upon passing the test.  Retraining is required per DOT regulation – see 49CFR172.704 which states:

Recurrent training. A hazmat employee must receive the training required by this subpart at least once every three years. For in-depth security training required under paragraph (a)(5) of this section, a hazmat employee must be trained at least once every three years or, if the security plan for which training is required is revised during the three-year recurrent training cycle, within 90 days of implementation of the revised plan.

IATA, however, requires retraining every 24 months. Since this is a multi-modal course that includes IATA – your certificate expires every 2 years.

The DOT cannot really enforce 24 months so you could decide to refresh every 3 years if you do not need to sign IATA shipping papers.

Course Description

This course is intended to fulfill the recurrent training requirements for individuals classifying products and assigning shipping descriptions for products under the transport regulations of US DOT, IMDG, IATA and Canadian TDG. Individuals taking this refresher must certify that they have successfully completed an initial training course on this topic. The class will be fast-paced and present the criteria for each hazard class (other than classes 1 and 7) briefly but mainly work through examples to refresh classification skills. Additional time and examples will refresh and improve selection of proper shipping names. Classification exemptions will also be covered. A test will be administered at the end of the course and students who pass the test will be awarded a certificate that documents the successful completion of the course.

This is an intermediate course.  While there are no prerequisites for this course, this is a refresher course, and it is recommended that participants have taken the SCHC course titled Multi-Modal Hazardous Materials / Dangerous Goods Classification Training or have taken a comparable course.

Course Objective

The course objective is to meet the regulatory requirements of US DOT, IATA and IMDG for refresher training as a hazmat employee. The US DOT requires refresher training at least every 3 years while IATA requires retraining every 24 months. Successful completion of the course will meet these requirements.

Intended Audience

Hazard communication professionals who have completed initial training in the past and need refresher training to demonstrate their skills in completing Section 14 of the SDS and/or developing compliant shipping descriptions for their products.
